About Lyrics Born:
Amongst the dusty records of UC Davis’ KDVS college radio station, Tom Shimura, who currently makes records as Lyrics Born, found too much to love. Sandwiched between gatefold LPs, 12-inch singles, dub versions and white-labels was a reservoir of inspiration that he would draw on for the following decades. That was then. This is now. Since his college days, Bay Area-native Lyrics Born’s raw, authentic talent has been polished to a gleaming beacon of originality in a time when it’s needed most. Over the years, he has appeared on dozens of tracks with hundreds of artists and taken up production duties for bands like Poets of Rhythm and Galactic. He calls himself a “serial collaborator,” but that is a typically modest way of putting it. His peers want to be in the studio with him not only because of his skill and work ethic. They trust him to make good things happen. Maybe it’s because of the way LB sees the world—success is about being true to yourself and to your relationships. Take care of that and you find lots of people moving in your time to your song. LB says his songs are about “perseverance, surviving, turning the corner". About Vokab Kompany: Vokab Kompany is a genre-defying collection of sound comprised of vocalists Rob Hurt and Burke Baby. With live accompaniments by their five-piece band, they use heavy synths, guitars, saxophone, bass and drums to create an innovative sound that blankets audiences and leaves them in a musical stupor. While maintaining a rigorous touring schedule, the San Diego natives have also found themselves as hometown favorites, garnering recognition at the San Diego Music Awards and winning several awards including best Hip Hop album and best Hip Hop performance. An interesting feat for a band that could just as easily be called Electronic, Funk, Jam or Rap in the same breath.
In addition to their accolades at home and on the road, Vokab has released several studio albums to critical acclaim. Their unique mesh of style has led them to delicious collaborations and over a dozen national syncs, including two Kia commercials, a spot on STARZ movie channel, and music on TV shows like Franklin and Bash and the Today Show. Their song World Wide was the anthem for the trailers of the new Sacha Baron Cohen movie.
On the touring side, the duo is fresh off of a West Coast headline tour supporting their most recent album. They’d previously embarked on a six-month tour fronting the Run DMC Remixed tribute for Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, with appearances everywhere from Brooklyn to San Francisco to New Orleans for Jazzfest. Along with their full band, they have played countless festivals including Snowglobe, Electric Forrest and Coachella and have toured with bands of all genres, from Umphrey's McGee to Collie Buddz to Del The Funky Homosapien.
The spontaneity of the band’s live performance is what has allowed them to cross genres so effortlessly; dancers, performance artists, guest musicians and unique arrangements continue to surprise fans, and exemplify the defining aspects of a Vokab Kompany show.
